Thrybergh Country Park is a former reservoir which was created between 1876 and 1880 as a source of drinking water to serve the population of Doncaster to the east. The park was acquired by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council who opened the site as a nature reserve and country park in 1983.
The pretty lake, meadows and wildlife provided an interesting two-mile circular walk for seventeen u3a members. At Hope’s hide some of us were fortunate enough to see a great spotted woodpecker at the bird feeders. As we walked through the meadow area we admired the sculptures (one of which was a Covid memorial) and bug houses. On the lake we saw grebe, coots, cygnets and swans.
After the walk we all enjoyed lunch at the nearby Earl of Strafford pub in Hooton Roberts.
