March 2026

At our March meeting we discussed the memoir, or family biography, The Hare with Amber Eyes (A Hidden Inheritance) by Edmund de Waal. We were unanimous in agreement that this book was an excellent choice. Its main theme seems to be survival through adversity, both of the once fabulously wealthy pan-European, Jewish Ephrussi family, and also, symbolically in the saving of a collection of “netsuke” or Japanese miniature sculptures. The book begins and ends with the netsuke, now owned by the author who is also a famous ceramicist. Our group found much to discuss, including anti-semitism.
