The books discussed, all by Anne Tyler, were:-
The Accidental Tourist
Ladder of Years
If Morning Never Comes
Vinegar Girl - a remake of Taming of the Shrew
Redhead by the Side of the Road
Patchwork Planet (read by an absentee member who said they had enjoyed the book)
Clock Dance (read by an absent member who sent their views on this and
French Braid)
It was interesting how the Group chose such a wide range of Anne Tyler books. To quote from one of the Group who said they had thoroughly enjoyed the books they read: ‘Despite them (the books) being American and reflecting a different culture from our own, they describe ordinary people and family life with all its relationships and the problems and misunderstandings which arise. They are full of the hurts, pains of living, but also the joys and small miracles’. Anne Tyler is a master of making quotidian events extraordinary. Overall Anne Tyler received very positive reviews from the Group, however there was some suggestion that the repeated focus on family life made her books somewhat predictable. Certainly not everyone’s view but a Group member did dislike The Accidental Tourist to the extent that they believed Anne Tyler’s humour was cruel and the main character was not worth wasting time on therefore could not continue to read the book. However, what is interesting about the Group is that opinions so often vary allowing for some good discussions.
