At our meeting on Thursday we discussed the work of Robert Harris. First we looked at a list of the titles and topics of all his nonfiction books and novels, noting that before he became a novelist he was a political journalist.
The novels which we had variously read for the meeting were (in order of their publication) FATHERLAND, ARCHANGEL, POMPEII (read by 3 group members), THE GHOST (read by 2 members unable to attend but whose reports we looked at), THE FEAR INDEX and V2. Our discussion also touched upon THE SECOND SLEEP, ACT OF OBLIVION, PRECIPICE, the CICERO TRILOGY and SELLING HITLER, one of Harris’s journalistic investigations.
It was agreed that the novels were very readable, with limited casts of characters and strong plots. Most were historical novels with well-researched backgrounds and fictional characters inserted as a means of bringing the stories to life.
On June 25th our book to discuss will be THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY by Matt Haigh. On July 23rd our topic will be “Iconic Nonfiction” (e.g. popular science, history, memoirs, polemic, etc.).
