Poems Chosen - November 2024

Hi everyone,

Well that was another excellent meeting with our usual wide-ranging discussions and the by-now-normal wide selection of poetry. I really think the group just keeps on getting more and more interesting and more and more enjoyable. I know I really look forward to meeting you all, hearing wonderful poems and talking about All Kinds of Stuff. Where else will you hear about flying like a curlew, flying flat across the sea in an RAF Lancaster-based plane, hearing about St Augustin, folk-song as excellent poem, poetry about advanced physics, swans (not from Goole), bits of rifles and japonica, why Billy went to war, how Ann Bronte felt, rugby playing babies, boy actors, realistic comments about age and love in Dublin? Not to mention the role played by Terrence Stamp in Waterloo Sunset. Pretty impressive huh? And a new member to welcome!

I read Raglan Road by Patrick Kavanagh and Curlew by Philip Rush (see below)

Jane read How Can That Be My Baby? by Pam Ayres

Carol read Wild Swans At Coole by WB Yeats

Sue read Was It Not Curious? by Stevie Smith

Catherine read Farewell by Ann Bronte

Felicity read The Boy Actor by Noel Coward

Dave read The Town Hall Yard by Jez Lowe

Irene read Weathering by Fleur Adcock

Lynn read The Volunteer by Robert Service

Nancy read Photons by Richard Kell

Thanks to you all. Our next meeting is on December 17th. If you like, bring poems suitable for that time of year. Or not! As you like it as the man said.

Cheers

David

Here are 2 poems by Philip Rush from his latest collection Camera Obscura (The Garlic Press, 2023 - £10) Copied with kind permission of the author.
