Doncaster

September meeting

I received apolgies from Nancy, Dave, Ralph, both Sues and Chris

We were able to welcome Bob and Gilly to the group

I read Himself by Thomas P Lynch and The Windhover by Gerard Manley Hopkins

It is a Petrachan sonnet and we talked a little abouit that type of sonnet and how it differs from a Shakesperian sonnet.

Hopkins used a form he called sprung rhythm and we discussed that.

Vicky read The Lion and Albert by Marriott Edgar and As Autumn Takes The Throne by Christine Tottie. Christine was a pupil at Hall Cross aged 13. Vicky read the poem from an anthology of writing by children.

Lynn read The Age of Innocence bt Steve Ellis and Death in Leamington by John Betjemin

Irene read In Your Mind by Carol Ann Duffy and From An Elegy On Captain Cook by Anna Seward

Catherine read The Way We Live by Kathleen Jamie and Part One of The Lady of Shalott by Tennyson

Carol read Omens by RS Thomas and I Kicked A Mushroom by Simon Armitage

Gilly and Bob recited and read The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes

Jane read I Want To Be A Yorkshireman by Chris Burden and Round and Round the Car Park by Pam Ayers.

This was, as ever, a lively and interesting meeting. Once again, there was a wide variety of poems and a lot of discussion., some very serious. For example, we had a long talk about language that is (or was) taboo, how language changes, how usage changes and how different people react differntly and quite rightly, have very different opinions about language use.

Lynn revealed a very convincing Wolverhampton accent. Gilly recited a lot of The Highwayman by heart and Jane recommended a small company who service and repair computers.
